Important: What to Do If You Receive an IRS CP2000 Notice

by | Mar 27, 2026

A CP2000 notice is sent when the IRS believes there’s a difference between the income reported on your tax return and the information they received from third parties like employers, banks, or brokerage firms.

In other words, the IRS is saying:

“Based on the information we have, we think your tax should be higher.”

This commonly happens when:

• A 1099 or W-2 wasn’t included
• Stock sales were reported without cost basis
• Retirement or crypto transactions weren’t fully reported
• Income was reported twice or incorrectly

Here’s where many taxpayers make a costly mistake:

They assume the IRS is correct and simply agree to the notice.

The problem is—the IRS often doesn’t have the full picture.

For example, if stock sales are reported without cost basis, the IRS may treat the entire amount as profit—even though only a portion is actually taxable or it may even be a loss. That alone can result in thousands of dollars of overstated tax.

⚠️ What You Should Do Before Responding

Before you agree or send payment:

• Carefully review the notice
• Compare it to your original return
• Look for missing information or errors
• Gather supporting documentation

You have the right to:

• Agree
• Partially agree
• Or dispute the proposed changes

But ignoring the notice can lead to additional penalties and further IRS action.

🎯 The Bottom Line

A CP2000 notice is serious—but it is also one of the most fixable IRS issues when handled correctly.

The key is responding strategically, not emotionally.
